Classy Fillies Knock Heads in Grade 2 Buena Vista

Category : News - Mon 16/02/2015 - 13:24 EST

The Grade 2 $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes is the featured race February 16 at Santa Anita with a compact field of six fillies and mares set to contest the one mile race on turf.

La Tia leads the way as the 5/2 morning line favorite after winning the Grade 3 Athenia Stakes at Belmont and Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at Del Mar to close her 2014 season.  The Armando de la Cerda trainee has not raced since November 30, but will be tough to beat if she duplicates the form that made her a four-time graded stakes winner in 2014.  Joel Rosario will have the mount breaking from the rail.  La Tia has won 10 of 23 career starts for earnings of $983,326.

Harbor tries to overcome "seconditis"

Diversy Harbor (3/1) finished second in a pair of Grade 3’s – The October 25 Autumn Miss and December 27 Frankel Stakes – to close 2014, and will also be making her 2015 debut.  The Thomas Proctor trainee also ran second in the Grade 1 American Oaks and Grade 3 Providencia Stakes last year.  Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens will attempt to guide the four year-old daughter of Curlin to her first win since March 8.

Nashoba's Gold makes second start off layoff

The lightly-raced Nashoba’s Gold (3/1) returned following an eight month layoff to run ninth in the Megahertz Stakes January 17 at Santa Anita for trainer Carla Gaines.  Nashoba’s Gold won the Grade 3 Providencia and Grade 2 Honeymoon Stakes last spring, and should be much tighter for the Buena Vista.
