Best Kentucky Derby Contenders

The top contenders for the 2020 Kentucky Derby are Tiz the Law, Authentic, Art Collector, and Honor A. P.

Tiz the Law is a New York-based runner for Sackatoga Stable, who campaigned 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide. He has the same trainer as that New York-bred, Barclay Tagg. Tiz the Law already won the “first” leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes (G1), which took place before the Kentucky Derby for the first time this year.

Authentic is one of four horses hailing from California. He is trained by five-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert, who also has Thousand Words in the race.

Thousand Words cost $1 million as a young horse and just won the Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar on August 1, which was California’s last prep for the Kentucky Derby. That day he defeated Honor A. P., an impressive winner of the Santa Anita Derby (G1) in June.

The other California contender is Rushie, who comes from the Michael McCarthy barn but might run on the Kentucky Derby undercard.

Other top contenders are Art Collector, who won the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland, and Tampa Bay Derby (G2) winner King Guillermo.

Kentucky Derby Longshots

There are several longshots in the 2020 Kentucky Derby who could hit the trifecta or superfecta and cause a nice payout.

The first of those is Dr Post. Todd Pletcher trains the son of Quality Road, which cost $400,000 as a yearling. He was third in the Haskell last out after running second behind Tiz the Law in the Belmont. He is flying under the radar.

One-eyed Necker Island would be a popular choice. He is trained by Chris Hartmann and is by Hard Spun, who finished second behind Street Sense in the 2007 Kentucky Derby. Necker Island was third in the Ellis Park Derby on August 9.

Ny Traffic finished second in the Haskell behind Authentic by a nose. He is a horse a lot of people like coming into the 2020 Kentucky Derby. The gray horse is trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr. He was second over the Churchill Downs track in late May and won an allowance race at Gulfstream Park in Florida impressively over the winter.

Kentucky Derby Post Positions

Post positions for the 2020 Kentucky Derby will be drawn on Wednesday, September 2. In the event that a horse is on the waiting list – known as the also-eligible list – he has until scratch time on Friday morning to get in by another horse ahead of him scratching.

This is the first year in a long time that it doesn’t seem more than 20 horses will try to get into the starting gate. It is also the first year that Churchill Downs will use a newly constructed starting gate made specifically to hold 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby. Before there was always an extra gate to house the last few horses.

The 2020 Kentucky Derby takes place on September 5, around 6 pm Eastern.
