On Saturday, the stakes action continues at Laurel Park with the $100,000 City of Laurel Stakes. Restricted to three-year-olds, the seven-furlong contest has drawn a field of fourteen colts and geldings.
Ben Perkins, Jr. will saddle Wonderfella, tabbed as the morning line favorite at odds of 3-1. A bay son of Harlan’s Holiday, he has been on the board in seven of his eight lifetime starts with the lone blemish coming against graded stakes competition. He was last seen finishing third against optional claiming company at Laurel as the favorite after an awkward start. Xavier Perez will be aboard from post position eleven.
Lynx cutting back to seven-furlongs after going long
Second choice at 4-1 on the morning line is Lynx for trainer Cathal Lynch. A bay son of Horse of the Year Curlin, Lynx was purchased for $150,000 as a two-year-old by Peachtree Stable. He has won two of his eleven starts and comes out of an allowance victory at Parx. He has had a bullet workout since his last race and will be cutting back to a sprint after racing primarily around two turns. Jose Ortiz has the mount from post eight.
In Trouble trying to return to competitive form
Also in the field at odds of 15-1 on the morning line is In Trouble for trainer Anthony Dutrow and jockey Alex Cintron. Purchased for $120,000 as a juvenile, the bay son of Tiz Wonderful won two of his three starts as a two-year-old but has gone winless from three starts this year. He was third in the Gotham (G3) in March but was off the board in his subsequent starts. He has been on the shelf since June and has been training sharply for his return.
