In a rare Tuesday stakes event February 9 at Fair Grounds an overflow field of 15 fillies and mares is signed on to contest the $60,000 Mardi Gras Stakes at five and a half furlongs on the grass.
3/1 morning line favorite Leigh Court leads the way in a doozy of a betting race, as the Michael Stidham trainee will try to bounce back from a four-month layoff and regain her winning form. Leigh Court was last seen finishing eighth in the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America October 3 at Keeneland – a race the six year-old mare won in 2014. The accomplished turf and synthetic track sprinter has won 7 of 15 career starts and has enough back class to make her a major player even if she comes back a bit rusty. Florent Geroux will have the mount breaking from post 4.
Adrianne G tries to stay hot
Adrianne G (6/1) will also be making her first start of 2016 after finishing last year with a pair of victories, including a last-out score in the Battle of New Orleans Stakes November 28 at Fair Grounds. The Willliam Brett Calhoun-trained filly has won 9 of 23 career starts and will be formidable if able to duplicate her best form.
Eden Prairie needs return to form
Eden Prairie (8/1) may not quite be as good as she once was, but the six year-old daughter of Mizzen Mast represents brings plenty of back class and could be viewed as an excellent value play if sent to post at her morning line odds.
