$90,000 Wickerr Stakes Draws Field of Nine
This Wednesday at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, the track will host the 25th running of the $90,000 Wickerr Stakes. The one mile race will be contested on the turf and has drawn a field of nine colts and geldings.
The morning line favorite at 3-1 is Bright Thought, a ridgling son of Hat Trick (JPN) trained by Jorge Gutierrez. While his form has taken a sharp nosedive since a last-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Mile in November, he is a Grade 2 stakes winner. Rafael Bejarano will be back in the irons and has been aboard for two of his four prior victories. They will break from post position four.
Second start of the year for No Jet Lag
Second choice is No Jet Lag, tabbed at 7-2 on the morning line for trainer Simon Callaghan and Corey Nakatani. The four-year-old gelded son of Johar was bred in Kentucky but began his career in Great Britain as a juvenile. He made his stateside debut last August with a win at Del Mar and has won a total of four of his twelve outings including a Grade 2 stakes. He will be making only his second start of the year and first since a sixth-place finish in the Arcadia Stakes (G2) in February.
Safety Belt trying for first stakes win
Known for his success with South American imports, Ron McAnally will send out Safety Belt (ARG) with Joe Talamo aboard. Installed at 5-1 on the morning line, the five-year-old son of Easing Along was Group 1 placed in his native Argentina before making his United States debut in January. He has won two of his four recent starts and will be trying to earn his first stakes win.
