Absence of Wise Dan Gives Other Milers Hope in Shoemaker
With Wise Dan on the sidelines recovering from colic surgery, the turf mile division has gotten temporarily more wide open. Though Obviously has gotten trounced both times he and Wise Dan have met over his home track, Santa Anita, he looks formidable in the $400,000 Shoemaker Mile (G1) this weekend.
Making his second start for trainer Philip D’Amato after trainer Mike Mitchell announced his retirement in April, the six-year-old Irish-bred son of Choisir (AUS) was much the best in his only other start this year, the American Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita in May under regular rider Joe Talamo. Installed as the 8-5 favorite, he will break from the inside post position which will only be advantageous with his sharp early speed.
Argentine invader has won last two on US turf
Also in the field is the rising turf star Winning Prize (ARG) who is a perfect two-for-two on the year and second choice at 5-2. Trained by Neil Drysdale and ridden by Corey Nakatani, the five-year-old son of Pure Prize was gallant in victory in the Frank Kilroe Mile (G1) in his most recent start in March. He prevailed by a hard-fought half a length over eight rivals.
Belmont Stakes trainer has a Shoemaker entry
Also in the field, Belmont Stakes winning trainer Christophe Clement has shipped Summer Front from their home base at Belmont Park. The five-year-old son of War Front will have the popular “Jersey” Joe Bravo aboard and will try to capitalize if anyone is quick enough to hook Obviously early. He was last seen finishing second in the Fort Marcy (G3) at Belmont Park in May behind longshot Five Iron.
