On Wednesday at Del Mar, the featured race is the $90,000 The Green Flash Handicap. The six-furlong contest will be run on the synthetic main track and has attracted a field of seven including the popular veteran, Caracortado.
Caracortado, the immensely talented and injury plagued gelding, has been installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite as he makes his second start of the year and only fourth outing since November of 2011. Trained by Michael Machowsky, the seven-year-old gelding will have Rafael Bejarano in the irons after the pair turned in a third-place finish off the bench in July on the turf at Del Mar. The nine-time winner has won four times on synthetics and will break from post five.
Merit Man looks to improve second off layoff
Merit Man will also be making his second start off of an extended layoff and has been tabbed at 3-1 for trainer Robert Hess, Jr. The four-year-old colt was on the sidelines for just over a year following a last-place finish in the Woody Stephens (G2) last summer and returned with a fourth place finish against optional claiming competition, the same race that Caracortado launched his comeback in. Kent Desormeaux will be aboard the son of With Distinction and the pair will break from post two.
No Jet Lag returns to synthetics
Simon Callaghan will send out No Jet Lag at odds of 7-2 on the morning line. The four-year-old son of Johar has raced primarily on the turf but broke his maiden over synthetics in Great Britain as a juvenile. Corey Nakatani will be aboard the Grade 2 winner after two off-the-board finishes against stakes company. He is cutting back to a sprint after racing at a mile in his recent starts and will break from post six.
