Category : News - Thu 16/03/2023 - 10:10 EDT

The £625,000 Cheltenham Gold Cup (G1) on Friday, March 15 is one of the most eagerly awaited events of the year for everyone who enjoys betting horse races!  It is one of the richest races of the jumps season, it is the feature race of the Cheltenham festival, and it drew a field of 13 horses, meaning that whoever figures out the race will be paid handsomely!

The race features the 1-2 finishers of the previous two editions of the race: Minella Indo beat A Plus Tard in 2021, and then A Plus Tard turned the tables on Minella Indo in 2022. Noble Yeats, the 2022 winner of the Grand National, also joins the fray at Cheltenham.

Will one of these horses win, or will someone new reach the pinnacle in the Gold Cup?  Keep on reading to find out, and to learn the best places to bet the Cheltenham Gold Cup in California!

Cheltenham Gold Cup Handicapping

Now that you have your California online betting account, it is time to start handicapping the race!  These are the most interesting contenders in the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Favorites

Bravemansgame has been in excellent form this season: he has won six of his last seven races, including both since coming back from wind surgery. Though he is new to chasing at Cheltenham specifically, he won the King George VI (G1) in December like a proper top-level horse and is consistent enough to trust to hold his form in another top-level race.

Galopin des Champs is the likely favorite with good reason. The top hope in Willie Mullins’ yard, he has won seven of his last eight, including the Irish Gold Cup (G1) last out. Though his only stumble came when he fell over the last at Cheltenham last year, he was going very well before then. He also carries seven fewer pounds than highweight A Plus Tard, another point in his favor.

Highweight A Plus Tard is the defending champion and ran second in this race last year, but there are reasons to be cautious at a short price. Not only is he the highweight, but he also comes off of an uncharacteristic stumble: he pulled up last out, the only time he has ever been out of the money, much less failed to finish. On his best he fits, but in a deep field he is worth taking a shot against.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Exotics Horses

Ahoy Senor is looking like a horse for the Cheltenham course: he won the Cotswold Chase (G2) last out and took second in a novice event over the course last year. Though he does not always find his best, he fits well if he does find it, he will carry an entire stone less than top weight, and he is the proper price to bet he runs one of his better races.

A Plus Tard’s stablemate in the de Bromhead yard, Minella Times, is interesting for exotics. Though he may not be quite as good as he was two years ago, he does come out of a win in the New Years’ Day Chase (G3), and he has an uncanny ability to find his best form at Cheltenham. That should be enough to find the exotics, even know.

Though Stattler was well beaten by Galopin des Champs last out, he has been second in both starts this campaign (including to Minella Indo two back), and won a novice chase at Cheltenham last year. He is well weighted, 17 pounds below A Plus Tard, and his consistency is another point in his favor.
