On Saturday at Gulfstream Park, the track will host the inaugural running of the $75,000 H. Allen Jerkins Stakes. Scheduled to be run at two miles on the turf, the race has drawn a field of eleven colts and geldings.
Topping the field as the morning line favorite at odds of 2-1 is Unitarian for trainer Todd Pletcher. A five-year-old son of Pulpit bred and owned by Robert S. Evans, he has won four of his eighteen career starts including the Elkhorn (G2) and will race without blinkers for the first time since 2013. He has been training steadily for his seasonal debut and while he is unproven at two-miles, he has won at a mile and a half. Javier Castellano will be aboard and they will break from post two.
Reflecting trying to earn first stakes win
Second choice at 5-2 on the morning line is Reflecting, a homebred son of Elusive Quality for the Phipps Stable. Trained by Claude McGaughey, III, the six-year-old is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Imagining and is a three-time winner. He has gone winless since an allowance victory in April of 2013 and will be trying to earn his first stakes win. He was third in his only prior attempt going two miles and will have Edgar Prado aboard from post position three.
Tattenham trying to return to form
Also in the field at morning line odds of 12-1 is Tattenham for trainer Graham Motion. A five-year-old gelded son of Rock Hard Ten owned by West Point Thoroughbreds, he has won three of his fifteen career starts and is going for his first stakes win. He was last seen finishing sixth in a claiming race at Gulfstream in his first start of the year. He will get a jockey change to Rafael Hernadez and they will break from post position nine.
