Favorites Must Rebound From Poor Performances in $85,000 Merrillville Stakes
With mid-week stakes action around the country sparse, the September 10 card at Indiana Grand Race Course features the $85,000 Merrillville Stakes for Indiana-bred fillies and mares as a field of ten is set to contest the six furlong event on the main track.
Ain’t She a Saint is the 3/1 morning line favorite for trainer Jeff Greenhill despite a disappointing twelfth-place finish in her last start – the Florence Henderson Stakes. The five-year old daughter of Saintly Look is a winner of multiple stakes races over the local racing strip including victories in the Richmond Stakes in 2013 and the Shelby County Stakes in June with a career record of seven wins in twenty three lifetime starts.
Greenhill's other entry in great form
Greenhill also saddles In a Jif (4/1 ML), who has won three of her last five starts and six of twelve lifetime. In a Jif, also a daughter of Saintly Look, will try to turn the tables on her stablemate as she finished third in the Shelby County. The four year-old filly is looking for her first stakes win as jockey Albin Jimenez has the mount.
Yeardley looks to regain winning form
Like the favorite, 7/2 second choice, Yeardley is looking to rebound from a subpar performance in the Florence Henderson Stakes where she finished ninth for trainer Barbara McBride. Ridden by Fernando De La Cruz, Yeardley will try to regain the winning form she displayed June 28 in an allowance race at Indiana Grand. Yeardley has earned an impressive $500,117 in her career winning seven of twenty four starts.
