On Sunday at Del Mar, some of the top sprinters in the country will square off in the $250,000 Pat OBrien Stakes. The Grade 2 event has drawn a field of eight and will be run at seven furlongs over the synthetic main track.
The morning line favorite at 2-1 is Fed Biz for trainer Bob Baffert. The five-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway will break from post position two under Martin Garcia. He is cutting back to a sprint after annexing the field in the San Diego Handicap (G2) at Del Mar in July and will try to defend his title in the Pat O’Brien after winning last year’s edition. He has won six of his sixteen career starts and will be making his second start of the year.
Goldencents trying to earn first win of the year
Goldencents, second in the Pat O’Brien to Fed Biz last year, will try to avenge that defeat and is second choice on the morning line at 5-2. The four-year-old son of Into Mischief is trained by Doug O’Neill and will have Rafael Bejarano in the irons. He has been second in both starts this year and was last seen losing by half a length to Big Macher as the favorite in the Bing Crosby (G1). A multiple Grade 1 winner, Goldencents won the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) last year as a three-year-old.
Silentio to make synthetic surface debut
Also in the field is Silentio who will be making his first start on synthetics. Tabbed at 8-1 on the morning line for Gary Mandella, the five-year-old son of Silent Name (JPN) has raced on turf in all thirteen prior starts. Victor Espinoza will be back in the irons after the pair teamed up for a third-place finish behind Obviously in the Shoemaker Mile (G1). He is looking for his fifth career victory and first win of the year and will break from post position three.
