Field of Six Set for $100,000 Left Bank Stakes
Belmont Parks fall meet will kick off on Friday and is highlighted by the inaugural running of the $100,000 Left Bank Stakes. The one mile contest has drawn a field of six colts and geldings.
Topping the field at odds of 2-1 on the morning line is Pants On Fire. The globe-trotting son of Jump Start has had two starts this year since competing in the Japan Cup Dirt (G1) in December and was last seen finishing second in the Iselin (G3) at Monmouth Park. The six-year-old will be making his first start at Belmont Park and will break from post position five under Paco Lopez for trainer Kelly Breen.
Stormin Monarcho going for third win of the year
Second choice at odds of 5-2 on the morning line is the David Jacobson-trained Stormin Monarcho. A four-year-old gelded son of Monarchos, he has won two of his seven starts this year, both of which came against optional claiming competition. Cornelio Velasquez will remain in the irons after the pair finished second in the Alydar Stakes at Saratoga last time out. Stormin Monarcho will break from post position four.
Classy Alpha trying to get back on track
Also in the field is multiple Grade 1 winner Alpha, tabbed at odds of 5-1 from the inside post. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, the five-year-old son of Bernardini will have John Velazquez aboard carrying the royal blue and white silks of Godolphin Racing. Winless from two starts this year, Alpha was third in the Alydar Stakes last time out in his first start off of a six-month hiatus. His greatest achievements came in the Travers (G1) and Woodward (G1), both at Saratoga.
