On Saturday, Fair Grounds will begin their card with the 6th running of the $50,000 Sugar Bowl Stakes. The six-furlong race has attracted a field of five two-year-old colts and geldings.
Multiple stakes winner Cinco Charlie headlines the field as the 4-5 favorite on the morning line for trainer Steve Asmussen. A bay son of Indian Charlie purchased for $190,000 in March, he has won four of his seven starts including the Bashford Manor (G3). He was last seen defeating nine rivals as the favorite against stakes company at Laurel Park. He has been training steadily since that win and will have Robbie Albarado aboard from the outside post.
Control Stake going for back to back wins
Control Stake has been installed as the second choice at 9-5 on the morning line for trainer Tom Amoss . A bay son of Discreetly Mine purchased for $85,000 as a yearling, he has won two of his four starts and is fresh off of a front-running victory as the heavy favorite against optional claiming company at Fair Grounds. He will be trying to earn his first stakes victory after finishing second two back against stakes company. James Graham retains the mount from post two.
First try on dirt for well-traveled Bourbon Cowboy
Also in the field at morning line odds of 4-1 is Bourbon Cowboy. Trained by Richard Scherer, the bay son of Cowboy Cal will be making his first start on conventional dirt after racing exclusively on synthetics in his five prior starts. After finishing fifth in the Display Stakes at Woodbine going a mile and a sixteenth, he is cutting back to a sprint as he goes for his second career victory. Miguel Mena will be aboard for the first time from post three.
