Los Alamitos Futurity Handicapping

Now that you know where to bet the race online, it is time to learn about the contenders in the Los Alamitos Futurity.

Los Alamitos Futurity Favorites

Looking at the recent history of the race, it is hard to ignore trainer Bob Baffert. He has won all seven runnings of this race since it moved to Los Alamitos, and also won it six times when it was contested at Hollywood. He enters two in this year’s edition of the race: #3 Messier and #4 Barossa.

Messier will probably go off favored, given the presence of top California jockey Flavien Prat. Prat and Messier have some form together; they combined for a maiden win at Santa Anita in October as well as a victory in the Bob Hope (G3) at Del Mar in November. Messier has shown tactical pace at one turn, suggesting he will be near the front in his first route try. He will heave to prove he wants to go two turns, though there is enough in his pedigree to think it will suit.

Barossa is another well-spotted contender. He is likely to go off at a bit longer price, given the presence of Juan Hernandez in the saddle. Hernandez is Barossa’s regular rider but can go off a bit more ignored in the pools. Barossa already has three two-turn races under him, including a maiden win, and gets a class drop out of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). He also has the tactical speed to work a trip.

The Rest of the Field

Trainer Doug O’Neill also has a pair in this race. The better of them is #2 Durante, the most likely pacesetter in the Los Alamitos Futurity. Though it took Durante three tries to break his maiden, he improved second-out when trying a mile for the first time and then wired a one-mile maiden race last out despite stumbling. If the speed advantage continues from the opening week he stands to benefit, and he also keeps top-notch rider Umberto Rispoli.

#5 Slow Down Andy is the other runner from the O’Neill barn. The outside gate in a smaller field like this is positive, and he could get a forward spot on the step up from a sprint. However, he makes his first attempt at two turns, and he also has to prove himself for the first time against open company, as he has only ever faced California-bred fields.

#1 Olympic Legend, on the rail, completes the field. Trained by Luis Mendez, this runner tries two turns for the first time. His sire Street Boss tends to be a better sprint influence, though both of his winning half-siblings have scored at a mile or more. More than anything, Olympic Legend must prove that he has progressed with the best of his class; his maiden win came in June, but he has had two disappointing defeats since then.
