On Saturday at Santa Anita, the track will host the $300,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship. A qualifying race for the Breeders Cup Sprint (G1), the Grade 1 event will be run at six furlongs on the main track and has drawn a field of seven.
Masochistic has been installed as the morning line favorite at odds of 8-5 for trainer Ron Ellis. A five-year-old son of Sought After, the California-bred gelding has won six of his nine starts and is a multiple graded stakes winner. He is trying to return to winning form after finishing second in the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Del Mar last time out. Tyler Baze will be in the irons and they will break from the inside post position.
Wild Dude a consistent contender in California
Second choice at morning line odds of 3-1 is Wild Dude for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. A five-year-old son of Wildcat Heir, he has been on the board in fourteen of his seventeen starts and is a six-time career winner. A multiple graded stakes winner, he was second last time out in the Pat O’Brien Stakes (G2) at Del Mar and won the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) two races back. Rafael Bejarano will be aboard from post position five.
Gimme Da Lute facing older rivals
Also in the field at morning line odds of 3-1 is Gimme Da Lute for trainer Bob Baffert. The lone three-year-old in the race taking on older rivals, the bay son of Midnight Lute has been on the board in all nine starts and has six victories. He is coming into this race off of four consecutive victories and won the El Cajon Stakes last time out. Martin Garcia will be aboard and they will break from the outside post as he steps back up in class.
