Preakness Handicapping
Everyone knows the story of Authentic, the 2020 Kentucky Derby winner who was not considered able to get the 1 1/4 mile distance, but did so in style over favored Tiz the Law, who is not back for the Preakness. The only horse to ever beat Authentic is now retired, so he stands head and shoulders above the rest of this field.
A $350,000 purchase, the son of Into Mischief has now earned back over $2.8 million on the track. His trainer Bob Baffert is seeking to break the record as the all-time winningest Preakness trainer, while top rider John Velazquez has won nearly every major race except for the Preakness.
Standing in his way are horses like Art Collector, Swiss Skydiver, Thousand Words, Ny Traffic, and Mr. Big News.
Art Collector is riding a winning streak and has crossed the finish line first in six of nine career starts. He won both the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) over Swiss Skydiver and the Runhappy Ellis Park Derby before he was forced to miss the Preakness. He is a son of 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini and is trained by Tom Drury.
The filly Swiss Skydiver has been trotting the country to great success. She has graded wins in Florida, Arkansas, California, and New York, as well as a placing against males in Kentucky. She was the second choice for the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) but could do no better than second after putting away favored Gamine. Ken McPeek trains the daughter of Daredevil.
Mr. Big News was 46-1 when he finished third in the Kentucky Derby, and looked good ranging up on the turn with a shot to win. Bret Calhoun trains the son of Giant's Causeway, who has won just twice in eight starts but beat a salty field in the Oaklawn Stakes in May. Gabriel Saez will ride.
Thousand Words acted up in the Kentucky Derby paddock, flipped over, and was scratched, but the son of Pioneerof the Nile puts blinkers on for this and just won the Shared Belief Stakes in August over Honor A. P., who in turn is the only horse to beat Authentic. Baffert trains them both, Florent Geroux will ride.
Ny Traffic rounds out the top contenders. The gray son of Cross Traffic missed by just a nose when Authentic won the Grade 1 Haskell, but he finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby. Saffie Joseph, Jr. trains the colt.

Preakness Expert Advice
The Preakness is most likely to go to Authentic, but he will offer little to no value. The best options are to play longshots underneath him while keying him on top, or by hoping to upset him with a price play, such as Art Collector or Thousand Words. Keep an eye on the odds if there is a horse you absolutely cannot ignore, such as Ny Traffic or Jesus' Team going above 30-1 odds. They are must use horses at prices like that. Mr. Big News will be nowhere near his 46-1 in the Derby, but should still be double-digit odds and is likely to hit the board as he is a consistent sort.
Swiss Skydiver is difficult to peg; is she one of the best of her generation? She has traveled the country and won, but why did she lose the Kentucky Oaks? She could not get past Shedaresthedevil there and nearly went in the Kentucky Derby itself. Ny Traffic ran Authentic to a nose in the Haskell; is he just as good as Authentic, or was Authentic having a bad day? These are the questions you must ask when preparing your best Preakness bets.
