Best Queen's Plate Contenders

The top selection in the 2021 Queen’s Plate is #6 Munnyfor Ro. She comes into the Queen’s Plate off of a strong victory in the Woodbine Oaks, and regular rider Justin Stein opts to keep the faith instead of sticking with morning-line favorite Keep Grinding. Fillies often beat males in the Queen’s Plate, and Munnyfor Ro’s improving form makes her a serious threat.

Munnyfor Ro does her best work as a closer. That style ought to suit this race. With most of the field preferring to run on or near the lead, Munnyfor Ro should get an honest pace to finish into. Since she merely needs an honest pace to run a winning race and not a total collapse, she should be well primed to make herself known down the Woodbine stretch.

#7 Riptide Rock takes a significant step up in distance, from six furlongs last out to ten furlongs in this race. He should nonetheless be well suited. In his allowance win last out he proved that he handles the Woodbine Tapeta beautifully. He also has two-turn form at the tough Oaklawn winter meet and a solid distance pedigree, meaning that this longer trip on the Tapeta may be where he belongs.

#8 Keep Grinding is the morning line favorite. Though it is a concern that he loses regular rider Justin Stein to Munnyfor Ro, he does get a top-notch replacement in Rafael Hernandez, a jockey who has shown up in big races at Woodbine for years now. Coming off a good second in an open stakes last out, Keep Grinding may be able to return to peak form third off the layoff.

Best Queen's Plate Longshots

In a field of thirteen, it’s not all about the shorter-priced horses, of course!

#10 Dance Some Mo has an excellent chance in the Queen’s Plate, his stakes debut. The Graham Motion trainee has been holding his own in open allowance company at good tracks, usually, a positive sign leading into Canadian-bred stakes. His pedigree also shines: being by Uncle Mo from the family of Dance Smartly and Dancethruthedawn, a mile and a quarter should suit him perfectly.

Though Dance Some Mo drew toward the outside, he should be able to use his tactical speed to carve out a good trip. That especially holds true in the hands of his jockey Patrick Husbands, who is one of the most experienced riders at Woodbine and who already has two Queen’s Plate wins to his credit.

#12 Tidal Forces can also improve in the Queen’s Plate. He may go unnoticed on the tote since he has to turn the tables once a few of these from the Marine (G3) last out. But, he is tactical enough to carve out a trip from the outside gate. His nine-furlong win shows that he has some stamina, and being by Malibu Moon from the close family of long-winded turf mare Irish Mission, this further step up in the trip gives him even more upside.
