SF Mile runs this weekend at Golden Gate
The feature race this weekend at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is the $100,000 San Francisco Mile, a Grade III event for four-year-olds and upward on the turf. Held since 1948 (although there was no race in 2008 due to a scheduling conflict), the speed record for the SF Mile of 1:33.4 has been held since 1980 by Don Alberto, while only one horse Battle Dance, has captured the event twice, in 1957 and 1958. It's a San Francisco treat for pony bettors!
Hudson Landing looking for second victory
This year, Hudson Landing will have a chance to duplicate that feat when he goes into the gate to face as many as 15 others. In 2012, the six-year-old went off at 8-1 and scored a half-length upset win over the heavy 1-2 favorite Jeranimo. The Kentucky-bred son of Maria’s Mon has won 12 of 38 lifetime starts, with $487,648 in earnings. Hudson’s Landing is trained by Blaine Wright for Chappell Alpine Farms. Juan Hernandez is expected to pilot Hudson's Landing.
Control Seeker seeking revenge
Hudson’s Landing is one of many horses that will go to the gate with multiple stakes victories to his credit. Another top contender is Control Seeker, the runner-up to Hudson’s Landing last fall in the All-American Stakes, after winning both the Joseph T. Grace and Bull Dog handicaps. Other challenges are expected to come from Gallant Son, winner of this year’s Albany Stakes, and Grand Berry, who has a number of Graded Stakes win in Argentina to his credit.
