2/1 morning line favorite, Swipe, broke his maiden while winning the Summer Juvenile Championship Stakes in start number three July 12 at Los Alamitos. Trained by Keith Desormeaux, Swipe finished second in his career debut against maiden special weight company before returning to run third in the Tremont Stakes June 5 at Belmont. Kent Desormeaux will handle the mount for his brother while breaking from post 4.
East coast private purchase looks live
Paynes Prairie will make his west coast debut after an apparent private sale dictated the transfer of the colt from the Steve Asmussen barn to trainer Michael Pender. Paynes Prairie was previously scheduled to start in the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes in late July at Saratoga with Asmussen raving about the colt’s progress in morning workouts. The precocious runner was in impressive maiden winner July 4 at Belmont after finishing second in the Tremont Stakes ahead of the favorite. Paynes Prairie is a son of 2008 Grade 1 Wood Memorial winner Tale of Ekati out of a Songandaprayer mare.

At 3/1, Nyquist was a first-out maiden special winner for trainer Doug O’Neill June 5 at Santa Anita. Bred to win early, Nyquist is a son of 2010 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Uncle Mo.
