With a field of 13, the Belmont Derby will be one of the most exciting betting races of the summer! Here are the most interesting contenders.

Belmont Derby Favorites

Stone Age will probably go off favored in the Belmont Derby. He fits the profile of 2021 winner Bolshoi Ballet: trained by Aidan O’Brien, well-fancied in the Derby, but sent to Belmont after running off the board at Epsom. The drawback is, he has to prove he can win without the early lead in a race with American speed. However, he is the class and he fits a strong pattern.

The more interesting European from a price perspective is Nations Pride. Trained by Charlie Appleby, who has been razor-sharp with his shippers to the US over the last year, Nations Pride may have bitten off more than he could chew in the Epsom Derby, but was improving well and showing a love for 10 furlongs. Add the tactical speed he has, and he looks like a real threat.

Emmanuel will probably be best-bet among the American horses, especially with how hot his trainer Todd Pletcher has been and the fact that Irad Ortiz jumps off of Sy Dog to ride. However, Emmanuel has only run once on the grass and he still has yet to prove he can win going longer than ever without the early lead. With Classic Causeway in the field, that is a tough ask.

Belmont Derby Value Horses

The best bet in the Belmont Derby is Tiz the Bomb. His form this year is muddled, between Tapeta races against easier and dirt tries that weren’t impressive. But, turf horses often take well to Tapeta, and last year he proved he was a strong turf horse, winning the Bourbon (G2) and finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). With pace versatility and a slightly more inside post than other top contenders, that could add up to a winning return to grass.

Limited Liability has class to prove in this spot, as he tries Grade 1 company for the first time. However, his pedigree is excellent for the stretch out to ten furlongs. And, his form is going the right way. He should have more pace to chase this time around than he did when rallying for third in the Pennine Ridge last time, and that may just lead to him rising to the challenge of the top level.

Grand Sonata also interests for exotics. He is the second-stringer from the red-hot Todd Pletcher barn, something to take into account at the likely big price. Though he has class to prove, he has tactical speed and he has never run a bad race in seven starts. Add to that a pedigree that should appreciate the step up in trip, and he fits in exotic wagers.
