On Monday at Oaklawn Park, the featured is the $150,000 Southwest Stakes. Restricted to three-year-olds, the one-mile contest is the first prep race towards the Arkansas Derby (G1) and has drawn a field of fourteen colts and geldings.
Toews on Ice tops the large field as the heavy favorite at odds of 9-5 for trainer Bob Baffert. A dark bay son of Archarcharch, he has been on the board in all six career starts and is going for his fourth victory. After winning three straight races, including the Bob Hope Stakes (G3), he was last seen finishing second in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1). Martin Garcia will be aboard and they will break from post position four as he makes his three-year-old debut.
Synchrony stepping up to stakes competition
Also in the field at morning line odds of 9-2 is Synchrony for trainer Donnie Von Hemel. Bred and owned by Pin Oak Stable, the chestnut colt is a son of Tapit and has two wins from three starts. He will be making his stakes debut and is coming into this race off of two consecutive wins, one in a maiden race and the other in an optional claiming race at Churchill Downs. Shaun Bridgmohan will be aboard and they will break from post eight.
Class test for Gray Sky off maiden win
Also in the field at morning line odds of 15-1 is Gray Sky, a longshot for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. A gray son of Tapit, he was purchased for $700,000 as a yearling, he has been on the board in four of his five starts and will be trying to earn his second victory. He is stepping up to stakes competition for the first time after breaking his maiden last time out. Terry Thompson will be aboard and they will break from post position nine.
