Undefeated Colts, Bluebloods Battle in Grade 2 San Felipe
The $400,000 Grade 2 San Felipe March 7 at Santa Anita offers 50 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner and features a field of marquee three year-olds led by Dortmund and Ocho Ocho Ocho in the mile and one sixteenth event on the main track.
Dortmund (8/5) leads the field of ten after winning the Grade 3 Robert Lewis and Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity in his last two starts. The son of 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown is unbeaten in four tries and has bankrolled $449,400 for trainer Bob Baffert. Dortmund won both stakes tries by a head over Firing Line who he will not face in the San Felipe. Martin Garcia has ridden the colt in every start and will be aboard again breaking from post three.
Ocho Ocho Ocho launches Triple Crown campaign
Ocho Ocho Ocho (4/1) is also undefeated, winning all three of his starts including his last in the Grade 3 Delta Jackpot Stakes November 22. Also like Dortmund, Ocho Ocho Ocho is the son of a Kentucky Derby winner - his father, Street Sense, won the 2007 Derby. The James Cassidy trainee has worked steadily for his return including a pair of bullet works at Santa Anita on February 19 and February 26. Ocho Ocho Ocho’s Delta Jackpot win was his only start around two turns.
San Vicente winner can't be left out
Baffert will also saddle the speedy Lord Nelson (4/1) who will break from the rail after defeating 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champion Texas Red in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs.
