Untapable Faces Deep and Talented Field in Cotillion
The Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes September 20 at Parx features everything a $1 million dollar horse race should: a deep field, a superstar, and plenty of betting intrigue.
The mile and one sixteenth event for three year-old fillies features a talented field of nine runners - several of which are prepping for the Breeder’s Cup Distaff -including 7/5 favorite Untapable who returns to face her own gender after taking on the boys in the Grade 1 Haskell July 27. After overwhelming three year-old fillies in four consecutive graded stakes events this year – including two Grade 1 races – Untapable’s connections did the sporting thing and looked for more competition. They got it, and then some as Untapable labored home to a fifth-place finish in the Haskell. That effort, however, can be forgiven as Untapable began uncharacteristically slow and ran against the bias of a speed-favoring Monmouth strip.
Stopchargingmaria on a roll
While Untapable has been without equal in the three year-old filly division, Stopchargingmaria (7/2 ML) has been pretty darn good in her own right. The Todd Pletcher trainee has reeled off three straight graded stakes victories including two grade 1’s. In her last start, she won the Grade 1 Alabama at a mile and a quarter and should be ultra-fit.
Sweet Reason also razor-sharp
Sweet Reason (4/1 ML) is also coming off consecutive grade 1 victories as the Leah Gyarmati trainee paired up wins in the Acorn and Test Stakes. The daughter of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense has five wins in eight career starts for earnings of over $1.2 million.
