Woodbine Mile 2023: War Bomber can win with pace advantage

Woodbine Mile 2023: War Bomber can win with pace advantage

Category : News - Thu 14/09/2023 - 09:34 EDT

The Woodbine Mile (G1) is coming up Saturday, September 16 at Woodbine Racetrack. The race is one of the top betting horse races of the autumn season, and a key prep for the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita this fall. The race not only offers a cool $1 million purse, but also an automatic bid into the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

The Woodbine Mile is a reliably strong prep for the Breeders’ Cup. Over just the last twelve years, the Woodbine Mile winner has won that year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile five times: Court Vision (2011), Wise Dan (2012, 2013), World Approval (2017), and Modern Games (2022) all did the same-year sweep. Furthermore, 2015 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Tepin won the Woodbine Mile the next year.

Woodbine Mile Field

This is the official field for the 2023 Woodbine Mile including post positions, trainers, and jockeys:

  1. Master of the Seas (Charlie Appleby / William Buick)
  2. War Bomber (Norman McKnight / Rico Walcott)
  3. Shirl’s Speight (Roger Attfield / John Velazquez)
  4. Ice Chocolat (Mark Casse / Joel Rosario)
  5. My Sea Cottage (Mark Casse / Dylan Davis)
  6. Lucky Score (Mark Casse / Sahin Civaci)

The morning line can be a good guide for which horses are likely to take betting action, but they are no guarantee of a price. Instead, they are the track’s best guess about what the tote will look like. Instead, the best way to get the best Woodbine Mile odds is to bet the race online! Trusted online sportsbooks let you lock in the best odds the moment you bet!

Woodbine Mile Handicapping

With your wagering account set up, it is time to meet the leading contenders in the 2023 Woodbine Mile, including the best bet on the win end as well as the horses who can help you build exotic wagers.

Woodbine Mile Best Bet

War Bomber is the best bet in the 2023 Woodbine Mile. In a field of just six, tactical speed is important, and he has it. He won the King Edward (G2) last out over the same course and distance. In doing so, he tracked a sharp pace and kept on to win. With rabbit My Sea Cottage in the field, there is a good chance that exact same trip makes him a winner in the Mile.

Furthermore, War Bomber should be an overlaid price because of his trainer. He hails from the barn of Norm McKnight, who has won a lot of races in Ontario and Arkansas but is lesser known everywhere else. In a race like this one that draws an international betting audience, that means War Bomber is going to go a bit ignored in the market compared to his true chances of winning.

Woodbine Mile Exotics Horses

The likely favorite in the Woodbine Mile is Master of the Seas, and he does come in with a good shot. He is trained by Charlie Appleby, who is a well-proven trainer when it comes to shipping worldwide, and he won last year’s mile with Modern Games. The concern is pace; he does have some tactical versatility, but he likely will still have to run down War Bomber.

Ice Chocolat is the leader of a three-deep Mark Casse brigade. He comes into the Mile out of a third-place finish in the Fourstardave (G1) behind the classy Casa Creed. The issue is, Ice Chocolat also had rabbit My Sea Cottage with him in that race, and his pacesetting wasn’t enough to get him all the way there. Once again, he looks like a hit-the-board type.

The best chance for a price in the exotics is betting that the rabbit, My Sea Cottage, hangs around for a piece. He wasn’t disgraced when fourth in the Fourstardave, and he should move forward on the move to a one-turn mile configuration. As the longest price in the field, this gives him upside. Compare that to Shirl’s Speight, better over a two-turn trip, or Lucky Score, who would improve with more early pace.
